Bird Illustrations

A Survey of Historical Bird Illustrations

Our survey covers the periods between the earliest published bird illustrations and 1930.

The illustrations of birds in various historical documents are both informative and works of art, sometimes strikingly beautiful.  This section of the Black Range Exchange Website is a repository of bird illustrations.  It is a work in progress, you can help by identifying additional source material, developing the illustration extracts of the source material, or by researching and/or writing sections on the various artists or artistic ventures.

 Copy of Source Material link

Our efforts start with a source document, this may be a painting, a book, or a journal (The Ibis, Auk, etc.).  A .pdf copy, suitable for download or online reading, of each published book referenced on this site is linked to on this page of the website.

Illustrations contained in the

source material

A .pdf copy of the illustrations in the source material has been created and is hosted on this site, it is suitable for download or online reading.

 A Compilation of the Illustrations

These compilations group illustrations from various sources (including paintings and professional journals - which may not be included in “1” and “2” above) together by their English common name.  The complilations include range maps for each illustrated species and may include a bit of information about the species and links to photo and video images of the species.

Early Bird Artists

Short biographies of some of the more prominent bird artists are included in a separate .pdf.
